Athanaric was a harsh and obstinate See also:heathen, and his See also:short reign was chiefly famous for his brutal persecution of his See also:Christian See also:fellow-countrymen. In 376 he was utterly defeated by the See also:Huns, who a few years before had burst into See also:Europe. The bulk of the Visigothic See also:people sought See also:refuge within the See also:Empire in the region now known as See also:Bulgaria, but Athanaric seems to have fled into Transylvania. Being attacked there by two Ostrogothic chiefs he also, in 381, sought the See also:protection of the Roman emperor. See also:Theodosius I. received him courteously, and he was profoundly impressed by the glories of See also:Constantinople, but on the fifteenth See also:day after his arrival he died, and was honoured by the emperor with a magnificent funeral.
