ATHENRY , a See also:

Its name is derived from See also:Ath-na-riogh, the See also:ford of See also:kings; and it See also:grew to importance after the Anglo-See also:Norman invasion as the first town of the Burgs and Berminghams. The walls were erected in 1211 and the See also:castle in 1238, and the remains of both are noteworthy. A Dominican monastery was founded with great magnificence by Myler de Bermingham in 1241, and was repaired by the See also:Board of See also:Works in 1893. Of the Franciscan monastery of 1464 little is See also:left. The town returned two members to the Irish See also:parliament from831 the See also:time of See also:Richard II. to the See also:Union; but it never recovered from the See also:wars of the Tudor See also:period, culminating in a successful See also:siege by Red See also:Hugh O'Donnell in 1596.
