AVERRUNCATOR , a See also:

form of See also:long See also:shears used in See also:arboriculture for•"averruncating" or pruning off the higher branches of trees, &c. The word " averruncate " (from See also:Lat. averruncare, to See also:ward off, remove See also:mischief) glided into meaning to " See also:weed the ground," " See also:prune vines," &c., by a supposed derivation from the Lat. ab, off, and eruncare, to weed out, and it was spelt " aberuncate " to suit this ; but the New See also:English See also:Dictionary regards such a derivation as impossible.
