AVOIRDUPOIS , or AvERDUPOIS (from the See also:

French avoir de pois, goods of See also:weight), the name of a See also:system of weights used in See also:Great See also:Britain and See also:America for all commodities except the See also:precious metals, gems and medicines. The See also:foundation of the system is the See also:grain. A cubic See also:inch of See also:water weighs 252'458 grains. Of this grain 7000 now (see WEIGHTS AND See also:MEASURES) make a See also:pound avoirdupois. This pound is divided into 16 oz., and these ounces into 16 drachms. Avoirdupois Weight.
