BADULLA , the See also:

capital of the See also:province of Uva, See also:Ceylon, 54 M. S. E. of See also:Kandy. It is the seat of a See also:government See also:agent and See also:district See also:judge, besides See also:minor courts. It was in Kandyan times the See also:home of a See also:prince who ruled Uva as a principality. Badulla stands 2222 ft. above See also:sea-level; the See also:average See also:annual rainfall is 791 in.; the average temperature, 73°: The See also:population of the See also:town in 1901 was 5924; of the Badulla district, 186,674. There is a botanic See also:garden; and the town, being almost encircled by a river—the Badullaeya—and overshadowed by the Naminacooly Kande range of mountains (highest See also:peak 668o ft.), is very picturesquely situated. The railway See also:terminus at Bandarawella is 18 m. from Badulla. See also:Tea is cultivated by the planters, and See also:rice, See also:fruit and vegetables by the natives in the district.
