BAILEY, NATHAN or NATHANIEL (d. 1742), See also:English philologist and lexicographer. He compiled a Dictionarium Britannicum: a more compleat universal etymological English See also:dictionary than any extant, bearing the date 1730, but supposed to have been published in 1721. This was a See also:great improvement on all previous attempts, and formed the basis of Dr See also:Johnson's great See also:work. Bailey, who was a Seventh-See also:day Baptist (admitted 1691), had a school at See also:Stepney, near See also:London, and was the author of Dictionarium Domesticum and several other educational See also:works. He died on the 27th of See also:June 1742.
