BEREZINA , a See also:

river of See also:Russia, in the See also:government of See also:Minsk, forming a tributary of the See also:Dnieper. It rises in the marshes of Borizov and flows See also:south, inclining to See also:east, for 350 M. (250 M. navigable), for the most See also:part through See also:low-lying but well-wooded See also:country. As a navigable river, and forming a portion of the See also:canal See also:system which unites the See also:Black See also:Sea with the Baltic, it is of importance for See also:commerce, but is subject to severe floods. It was just above Borizov that See also:Napoleon's See also:army forced the passage of the Berezina, with enormous losses, on the 26th–28th of See also:November 1812, during the See also:retreat from See also:Moscow.
