BEREZOV , a See also:

town of See also:Asiatic See also:Russia, in the See also:government of See also:Tobolsk, 700 M. N. of the See also:city of that name, situated on three hills on the See also:left See also:bank of the Sosva, 26 m. above its mouth in the See also:Oki, in 63° 55' N. See also:lat. and 65° 7' E. See also:long. It has more than once suffered from conflagrations—for example, in 1719 and 18o8. See also:Prince See also:Menshikov, the favourite of See also:Peter the See also:Great and See also:Catherine I., died here an See also:exile, in 1729. In 1730 his enemy and See also:rival, Prince Dolgoruki, was interned here with his See also:family; and in 1742 See also:General Ostermann was sent to Berezov with his wife and died there in 1747. The yearly mean temperature is 25° Fahr., the maximum See also:cold being 4.7°. It has a See also:cathedral, near which See also:lie buried See also:Mary Menshikov, once betrothed to the See also:tsar Peter II., and some of the Dolgorukis. There is some See also:trade in furs, See also:mammoth bones, dried and salted See also:fish. Pop. (1897) 1073.
