TOBOLSK , a See also:

town of See also:Asiatic See also:Russia, See also:capital of the See also:government of the same name, on the right See also:bank of the Irtysh, near its confluence with the Tobol. Pop. (1900), 21,401. It is 305 M. E.N.E. from See also:Ekaterinburg, and is no longer the capital of See also:West See also:Siberia nor even an administrative centre for exiles. The kreml, or citadel, built in the reign of See also:Peter the See also:Great, by See also:Swedish prisoners, in See also:imitation of the kreml of See also:Moscow, contains the See also:cathedral, erected towards the end of the 17th See also:century. Some 12 M. See also:south-See also:east are the ruins of the " fort of Kuchum," the site of the capital of Siberia, Isker, before the See also:Russian See also:conquest. Tobolsk was founded in 1587 by See also:Cossacks, and forms the see of the See also:bishop of Tobolsk and Siberia.
