The harbour, which is small but deep, and sheltered by high ground, opens to the See also:east. It is about 22 M. long by m. wide; the See also:depth in the centre is over 40 ft. and soundings of over 30 ft. extend to within a very See also:short distance of the shores. It is the only safe See also:port easily accessible to large vessels for over 'coo m., between See also:Sfax in See also:Tunisia and See also:Alexandria, for, although there is safe and deep anchorage in the See also:recess of the Gulf of Bomba, the entrance is rocky and difficult. Tobruk has long been the out-let for the See also:trade of the oases which extend from Jarabub to Siwah, and are a stronghold of the See also:Senussi See also:order (see See also:CYRENAICA); and it is also the headquarters of the Libyan sponge See also:fishery, prosecuted by Greeks. In the See also:spring it is visited by a See also:great number of boats, to protect which a small Hellenic warship has sometimes been despatched. But it is as a future See also:man-of-See also:war harbour that Tobruk is likely to be important. It has been visited both by See also:British and See also:Italian squadrons and has become an See also:object of considerable solicitude to the See also:government of See also:Italy.
