BRETTEN , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the See also:grand duchy of See also:Baden, on the Saalbach, 9 M. S.E. of See also:Bruchsal by See also:rail. Pop. (1900) 4781. It has some manufactories of machinery and japanned goods, and a considerable See also:trade in See also:timber and live stock. Bretten was the birthplace of See also:Melanchthon (1497), and in addition to a statue of him by See also:Drake, a memorial See also:hall, containing a collection of his writings and busts and pictures of his famous contemporaries, has been erected.
