His parents were devoted to See also:music, and he was brought up to See also:play the 'cello, being educated at the Paris See also:Conservatoire. He played in See also:Pasdeloup's See also:orchestra, and soon began to compose, See also:writing a See also:cantata, See also:Genevieve de Paris, at an See also:early See also:age. In 1884 his Ouverture heroique was performed, followed by the choral symphonies, See also:Leda (1884), La Belle an bois dormant (1886). and Penthesilee. But he is best known as a dramatic composer. In 1887 his first See also:opera, Kerim, was produced; and in 1891 his successful opera Le See also:Reeve, with a libretto founded on See also:Zola's See also:story. Another subject from Zola resulted in the opera L'Attaque du See also:moulin (1893), and libretti by Zola himself were written for his next operas Messidor (1897) and L'Ouragan (1901). Among Bruneau's other See also:works may be mentioned his See also:Requiem (1896), and his two collections of songs, Lieds de See also:France and Chansons a dancer. He was decorated with the See also:Legion of See also:Honour in 1895. His musical criticisms, published in several volumes, are remarkable for See also:literary quality and vigour. See See also:Arthur See also:Hervey's See also:volume on Bruneau (1907).
