BUENAVENTURA , a Pacific See also:port of See also:Colombia, in the See also:department of See also:Cauca, about 210 M. W.S.W. of See also:Bogota. Pop. about 1200. .The See also:town is situated on a small See also:island, called Cascajal, at the See also:head of a broad See also:estuary or See also:bay projecting inland from the Bay of Choc6 and to m. from its mouth. Its See also:geographical position is See also:lat. 3° 48' N., See also:long. 770 12' W. The estuary is deep enough for vessels of 24 ft. See also:draught and affords an excellent See also:harbour. Buenaventura is a port of See also:call for two lines of steamers (See also:English and See also:German), and is the Colombian landing-See also:place 'of the See also:West See also:Coast See also:cable. The town is mean in See also:appearance, and has a very unhealthy See also:climate, oppressively hot and humid. It is the port for the upper See also:basin of the Cauca, an elevated and fertile region, with two large commercial centres, See also:Popayan and See also:Cali.
