king of See also:Mercia, succeeded to the See also:throne in 852, and in 852 or 853 called upon JEthelwulf of Wessex to aid him in subduing the See also:North Welsh. The See also:request was granted and the See also:campaign proved successful, the See also:alliance being sealed by the See also:marriage of Burgred to sEthelswith, daughter of IEthelwulf. In 868 the Mercian king appealed to 'See also:Ethelred and See also:Alfred for assistance against the Danes, who were in See also:possession of Notting-See also:ham. The armies of Wessex and Mercia did no serious fighting, and the Danes were allowed to remain through the See also:winter. In 874 the See also:march of the Danes from See also:Lindsey to See also:Repton drove Burgred from his See also:kingdom. He retired to See also:Rome and died there.
