In 676 he ravaged See also:Kent with See also:fire and See also:sword, destroying the monasteries and churches and taking See also:Rochester. 'Ethelred married Osthryth, the See also:sister of See also:Ecgfrith, king of See also:Northumbria, but in spite of this connexion a See also:quarrel arose between the two See also:kings, presumably over the See also:possession of the See also:province of See also:Lindsey, which Ecgfrith had won back at the See also:close of the reign of Wulfhere. In a See also:battle on the See also:banks of the See also:Trent in 679, the king of Mercia was victorious and regained the province. 'Elfwine, the brother of Ecgfrith, was slain on this occasion, but at the intervention of See also:Theodore, See also:archbishop of See also:Canterbury, 'Ethelred agreed to pay a See also:wergild for the Northumbrian See also:prince and so prevented further hostilities. Osthryth was murdered in 697 and "Ethelred abdicated in 704, choosing Ccenred as his successor. He then became See also:abbot of Bardney, and, according to See also:Eddius, recommended See also:Wilfrid to Ccenred on his return from See also:Rome. "Ethelred died at Bardney in 716.
