king of Wessex and See also:Kent (866-871), was the See also:fourth son of AEthelwulf of Wessex, and should, by his See also:father's will, have succeeded to Wessex on the See also:death of his eldest See also:brother'See also:Ethelbald. He seems, however, to have stood aside in favour of his brother'Ethelberht, king of Kent, to whose See also:joint kingdoms he succeeded in 866. 'Ethelred's reign was one See also:long struggle against the Danes. In the See also:year of his See also:succession a large Danish force landed in See also:East Anglia, and in the year 868 "Ethelred and his brother See also:Alfred went to help See also:Burgred, or Burhred, of See also:Mercia, against this See also:host, but the Mercians soon made See also:peace with their foes. In 871 the Danes encamped at See also:Reading, where they defeated "Ethelred and his brother, but later in the year the See also:English won a See also:great victory at " "Escesdun."
A fortnight later they were defeated at Basing, but partially retrieved their See also:fortune by a victory at " Mwretun " (perhaps Marden in See also:Wiltshire), though the Danes held the See also:- FIELD (a word common to many West German languages, cf. Ger. Feld, Dutch veld, possibly cognate with O.E. f olde, the earth, and ultimately with root of the Gr. irAaror, broad)
