CALAFAT , a See also:town of See also:Rumania in the See also:department of Doljiu; on the See also:river See also:Danube, opposite the Bulgarian fortress of See also:Vidin. Pop. (1900) 7113. Calafat is an important centre of the See also:grain See also:trade, and is connected by a See also:branch See also:line with the See also:principal Walachian See also:railways, and by a See also:steam See also:ferry with Vidin. It was founded in the 14th See also:century by Genoese colonists, who employed large See also:numbers of workmen (Calfats) in repairing See also:ships-which See also:industry gave its name to the See also:place. In 1854 a See also:Russian force was defeated at Calafat by the See also:Turks under Ahmed See also:Pasha, who surprised the enemy's See also:camp.
