CANINI, GIOVANNI AGNOLO (1617-1666) , See also:Italian designer and engraver, was See also:born at See also:Rome. He was a See also:pupil of See also:Domenichino and afterwards of See also:Antonio Barbalonga. He painted some See also:altar-pieces at Rome, including two admired pictures for the See also:church of See also:San Martino a' Monti, representing the martyrdom of St See also:Stephen and of St See also:Bartholomew. Having accompanied See also:Cardinal Chigi to See also:France, he was encouraged by the See also:minister See also:Colbert to carry into See also:execution his project of designing from medals, See also:antique gems and similar See also:sources a See also:series of portraits of the most illustrious characters of antiquity, accompanied with See also:memoirs; but shortly after the commencement of the undertaking Canini died at Rome. The See also:work, however, was prosecuted by his See also:brother See also:Marcantonio, who, with the assistance of See also:Picard and See also:Valet, completed and published it in 1699, under the See also:title of Iconografia di Gio. Ag. Canini. It contains 150 engravings. A reprint in Italian and See also:French appeared at Amster-See also:dam in 1731.
