CHINSURA , a See also:town of See also:British See also:India, on the See also:Hugli See also:river, 24 m. above See also:Calcutta, formerly the See also:principal Dutch See also:settlement in See also:Bengal. The Dutch erected a factory here in 1656, on a healthy spot of ground, much preferable to that on which Calcutta is situated. In 1759 a British force under See also:Colonel See also:Forde was attacked by the See also:garrison of Chinsura on its See also:march to See also:Chandernagore, but in less than See also:half an See also:hour the Dutch were entirely routed. In 1795, during the See also:Napoleonic See also:wars, the settlement was occupied by a British garrison. At the See also:peace of 1814 it was restored to the Dutch. It was among the cessions in India made by the See also:- KING
