Pop. (1895) 6917. Ciudad Juarez stands 3800 ft. above See also:sea-level on the right See also:bank of the Rio Grande del Norte, opposite the city, of El Paso, See also:Texas, with which it is connected by two See also:bridges. It is the northern See also:terminus of the Mexican Central railway, and has a large and increasing transit See also:trade with the See also:United States, having a See also:custom-See also:house and a United States consulate. It is also a military See also:post with a small See also:garrison. The town has a straggling picturesque See also:appearance, a considerable See also:part of the habitations being small See also:adobe or See also:brick cabins. In the fertile neighbouring See also:district See also:cattle are raised, and See also:wheat, See also:Indian See also:corn, See also:fruit and grapes are grown, See also:wine and See also:brandy being made. The town was founded in 1681-1682; its See also:present importance is due entirely to the railway. It was the headquarters of See also:President Juarez in 1865, and was renamed in 1885 because of its devotion to his cause.
