He was educated at Milford See also:Academy, became a clerk in his See also:father's See also:store in Milford, and in 1831, with his See also:brother See also:Aaron and his brother-in-See also:law See also:Samuel Daniels, succeeded to his father's business. In 1832 the See also:firm opened a See also:branch store in See also:Worcester, See also:Mass., and in 1833 Horace B. Claflin and Daniels secured the See also:sole See also:control of this See also:establishment and restricted their dealing to dry goods. In 1843 Claflin removed to New See also:York See also:City and became a member of the firm of Bulkley & Claflin, whosesale dry goods merchants. In 1851 and in 1864 the firm was reorganized, being designated in these respective years as Claflin, Mellin & See also:Company and H. B. Claflin & Company. Under Claflin's management the business increased so rapidly that the sales for a See also:time after 1865 probably exceeded those of any other See also:mercantile See also:house in the See also:world. Though the firm was temporarily embarrassed at the beginning of the See also:Civil See also:War, on See also:account of its large business interests in the See also:South, and during the See also:financial panic of 1873, the promptness with which Mr Claflin met these crises and paid every See also:dollar of his liabilities greatly increased his reputation for business ability and integrity. He died at See also:Fordham, New York, on the 14th of See also:November 1885.
