The son of an See also:artisan, he studied See also:law at See also:Toulouse and became a See also:solicitor's clerk in See also:Paris. He made a reputation in a limited circle by his first See also:book, See also:Les Martyrs ridicules (1862), a novel for which See also:Charles See also:Baudelaire, whose See also:literary See also:disciple Cladel was, wrote a See also:preface. He then returned to his native See also:district of See also:Quercy, where he produced a See also:series of pictures of See also:peasant See also:life in Eral le dompteur (1865), Le Nomme Qouael (1868) and other volumes. Returning to Paris he published the two novels which are generally acknowledged as his best See also:work, Le Bouscassie (1869) and La Fete votive de See also:Saint Bartholomee See also:Porte-glaive (1872). Une Maudite (1876) was judged dangerous to the public morals and cost its author a See also:month's imprisonment. Other See also:works by Cladel are Les Va-nu-pieds (1873), a See also:volume of See also:short stories; N'a qu'un ceil (1882), Urbains et ruraux (1884), See also:Gueux de marque (1887), and the See also:posthumous Juive errante (1897). He died at Sevres on the 20th of See also:July 1892.
