It carries on See also:silk-See also:worm breeding, silk-See also:spinning, and the manufacture of woollens, See also:paper, See also:leather and See also:cement. There is See also:trade in truffles. On the See also:rock which commands the town stands a huge keep, the See also:sole survival of a See also:castle (12th See also:century) to which Crest was indebted for its importance in the See also:middle ages and the Religious See also:Wars. The See also:rest of the castle was destroyed in the first See also:half of the 17th century, after which the keep was used as a See also:state See also:prison. Crest ranked for a See also:time as the See also:capital of the duchy of See also:Valentinois, and in that capacity belonged before the Revolution to the See also:prince of See also:Monaco. The communal See also:charter, graven on See also:stone and dating from the 12th century, is preserved in the public archives. Ten See also:miles south-See also:east of Crest lies the picturesque See also:Forest of Saon.
