DIAMANTINO , a small See also:

town of the See also:state of Matto Grosso, See also:Brazil, near the Diamantino See also:river, about 6 m. above its junction with the See also:Paraguay, in 14° 24' 33" S., 56° 8' 3o° W. Pop. (1890) of the See also:municipality 2147, mostly See also:Indians. It stands in a broken sterile region 1837 ft. above See also:sea-level and at the See also:foot of the See also:great Matto Grosso See also:plateau. The first See also:mining See also:settlement See also:dates from 1730, when See also:gold was found in the vicinity. On the See also:discovery of diamonds in 1746 the settlement See also:drew a large See also:population and for a See also:time was very prosperous. The mines failed to meet expectations, however, and the population has steadily declined. See also:Ipecacuanha and See also:vanilla beans are now the See also:principal articles of export.
