DIRCE , in See also:

Greek See also:legend, daughter of Helios the See also:sun-See also:god, the second wife of Lycus, See also:king of See also:Thebes. She sorely persecuted See also:Antiope, his first wife, who escaped to See also:Mount See also:Cithaeron, where her twin sons See also:Amphion and Zethus were being brought up by a herdsman who was ignorant of their parentage. Having recognized their See also:mother, the sons avenged her by tying Dirce to the horns of a See also:wild See also:bull, which dragged her about till she died. Her See also:body was See also:cast into a See also:spring near Thebes, which was ever after-wards called by her name. Her See also:punishment is the subject of the famous See also:group called " The See also:Farnese Bull," by See also:Apollonius and Tauriscus of See also:Tralles, in the See also:Naples museum (see GREEK See also:ART, See also:Plate I. fig. 51).
