FANUM FORTUNAE (mod. See also:Fano) , an See also:ancient See also:town of See also:Umbria, See also:Italy, at the point where the Via See also:Flaminia reaches the N.E. See also:coast of Italy. Its name shows that it was of See also:Roman origin, but of its See also:foundation we know nothing. It is first mentioned, with See also:Pisaurum and See also:Ancona, as held by See also:Julius See also:Caesar in 49 B.C. See also:Augustus planted a See also:colony there, and See also:round it constructed a See also:wall (of which some remains exist), as is recorded in the inscription on the triple See also:arch erected in his See also:honour at the entrance to the town (A.D. 9-10), which is still See also:standing. See also:Vitruvius tells us that there was, during Augustus's lifetime, a See also:temple in his honour and a temple of See also:Jupiter, and describes a See also:basilica of which he himself was the architect. The arch of Augustus bears a subsequent inscription in honour of See also:Constantine, added after his See also:death by L. Turcius See also:Secundus, corrector Flaminiae et Piceni, who also constructed a See also:colonnade above the arch. Several Roman statues and heads, attributable to members of the Julio-Claudian See also:dynasty, were found in the See also:convent of S. Filippo in 1899. These and other See also:objects are now in the municipal museum (E. Brizio in Notizie degli scavi, 1899, 249 seq.).
