FERENTUM, or FERENTINUM , an See also:ancient See also:town of See also:Etruria, about 6 m. N. of See also:Viterbo (the ancient name of which is unknown) and 3z M. E. of the Via See also:Cassia. It was the birthplace (32 A.D.) of the See also:emperor See also:Otho, was destroyed in the 11th See also:century, and is now entirely deserted, though it retains its ancient name. It occupied a See also:ridge See also:running from See also:east to See also:west, with deep ravines on three sides. There are some remains of the See also:city walls, and of various See also:Roman structures, but the most important ruin is that of the See also:theatre. The See also:stage front is still See also:standing; it is pierced by seven openings with See also:flat See also:arches, and shows traces of reconstruction. The_necropolis was on the See also:hill called Talone on the See also:north-east. See G.
