FUSARO, LAGO , a See also:lake of See also:Campania, See also:Italy, 2 m. W. of Baia, and 1 m. S. of the See also:acropolis of See also:Cumae. It is the See also:ancient Acherusia palus, separated from the See also:sea on the W. by a See also:line of sandhills. It may have been the See also:harbour of Cumae in See also:early antiquity. In the rst See also:century A.D. an artificial outlet was dug for it at its S. end, with a See also:tunnel, lined with See also:opus reticulatum and See also:brick, under the See also:hill of Torregaveta. This hill is covered with the remains of a large See also:villa, which is almost certainly that of Servilius Vatia, described by See also:Seneca (Epist. 55). There are remains of other villas on the shores of the lake. See also:Oyster cultivation is carried on there. See J. Beloch, Campanien (2nd ed., See also:Breslau, 1890), 188.
