GANGOTRI , a celebrated See also:

place of See also:Hindu See also:pilgrimage, among the See also:Himalaya Mountains. It is situated in the native See also:state of See also:Garhwal in the See also:United Provinces, on the Bhagirathi, the See also:chief See also:head-stream of the See also:Ganges, which is here not above 15 or 20 yds. broad, with a moderate current, and not in See also:general above 3 ft. deep. The course of the See also:river runs N. by E.; and on the See also:bank near Gangotri there is a small See also:temple about 20 ft. high, in which are images representing Ganga, Bhagirathi and other figures of See also:mythology. It See also:dates from the See also:early See also:part of the 18th See also:century. The See also:bed of the river adjoining the temple is divided off by the Brahmans into three basins, where the pilgrims bathe. One of these portions is dedicated to Brahma, another to See also:Vishnu and the third to See also:Siva. The pilgrimage to Gangotri is considered efficacious in washing away the sins of the devotee, and ensuring him eternal happiness in the See also:world to come. The See also:water taken from this sacred spot is exported by pilgrims to See also:India and sold at a high See also:price. The See also:elevation of the temple above the See also:sea is 10,319 ft.
