GMUNDEN , a See also:

town and summer resort of See also:Austria, in Upper Austria, 40 M. S.S.W. of See also:Linz by See also:rail. Pop. (1900) 7126. It is situated at the efflux of the See also:Traun See also:river from the See also:lake of the same name and is surrounded by high mountains, as the See also:Traunstein (5446 ft.), the Erlakogel (5150 ft.), the See also:Wilde Kogel (686o ft.) and the Millen Gebirge. It is much frequented as a See also:health and summer resort, and has a variety of lake, brine, See also:vegetable and See also:pine-See also:cone See also:baths, a hydropathic See also:establishment, inhalation See also:chambers, whey cure, &c. There are a See also:great number of excursions and points of See also:interest See also:round Gmunden, specially See also:worth mentioning being the Traun Fall, ro m. N. of Gmunden. It is also an important centre of the See also:salt See also:industry in See also:Salzkammergut. Gmunden was a town encircled with walls already in 1186. On the 14th of See also:November 1626, See also:Pappenheim completely defeated here the See also:army of the rebellious peasants. See F.
