GMUND , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the See also:kingdom of See also:Wurttemberg,' in a charming and fruitful valley on the Hems, here spanned by a beautiful See also:bridge, 31 M. E.N.E. of See also:Stuttgart on the railway to See also:Nordlingen. Pop. (1905) 18,699. It is surrounded by old walls, flanked with towers, and has a considerable number of See also:ancient buildings, among which are the See also:fine See also:church of the See also:Holy See also:Cross; St See also:John's church, which See also:dates from the See also:time of the See also:Hohenstaufen; and, situated on a height near the town, partly hewn out of the See also:rock, the See also:pilgrimage church of the Saviour. Among the See also:modern buildings are the gymnasium, the See also:drawing and See also:trade See also:schools, the See also:Roman See also:Catholic See also:seminary, the town See also:hall and the See also:industrial See also:art museum. Clocks and watches are manufactured here and also other articles of See also:silver, while the town has a considerable trade in See also:corn, hops and See also:fruit. The scenery in the neighbourhood is very beautiful, near the town being the See also:district called Little See also:Switzerland. Gmund was surrounded by walls in the beginning of the 12th See also:century by See also:Duke See also:Frederick of See also:Swabia. It received town rights from Frederick See also:Barbarossa, and after the extinction of the Hohenstaufen became a See also:free imperial town, It retained its See also:independence till 1803, when it came into the See also:possession of Wurttemberg. Gmund is the See also:birth-See also:place of the painter Hans= Baldung (1475—1545) and of the architect Heinrich Arler or Parler (fl. 1350).
