GONDOPHARES , or GONDOP'HERNES, an Indo-See also:

Parthian See also:king who ruled over the See also:Kabul valley and the See also:Punjab. By means of his coins his See also:accession may be dated with See also:practical certainty at A.D. 21, and his reign lasted for some See also:thirty years. He is notable for his association with St See also:Thomas in See also:early See also:Christian tradition. The See also:legend is that See also:India See also:fell to St Thomas, who showed unwillingness to start until See also:Christ appeared in a See also:vision and ordered him to serve King Gondophares and build him a See also:palace. St Thomas accordingly went to India and suffered martyrdom there. This legend is not incompatible with what is known of the See also:chronology of Gondophares' reign.
