GUALEGUAYCHU , a prosperous commercial and See also:

industrial See also:town and See also:port of the See also:province of Entre Rios, See also:Argentine See also:Republic, on the See also:left See also:bank of the Gualeguaychl See also:river, 11 m. above its confluence with the See also:Uruguay, and 12o m. N. of Buenos Aires. Pop. (1892, est.) 14,000. It is the See also:chief town of a See also:department of the same name, the largest in the province. A See also:bar at the mouth of the river prevents the entrance of larger vessels and compels the See also:transfer of cargoes to and from lighters. The town is surrounded by a See also:rich grazing See also:country, and exports See also:cattle, jerked See also:beef, mutton, hides, pelts, See also:tallow, See also:wool and various by-products. A See also:branch See also:line See also:running N. connects with the Entre Rios See also:railways at Basavilbaso. The town was founded in 1783.
