GUASTALLA , a See also:

town and episcopal see of See also:Emilia, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of Reggio, from which it is 18 m. N. by road, on the S. See also:bank of the Po, 79 ft. above See also:sea-level. It is also connected by See also:rail with See also:Parma and See also:Mantua (via Suzzara). Pop. (1901), 2658 (town); 11,091 (See also:commune). It has 16th-See also:century fortifications. The See also:cathedral, dating from the loth century, has been frequently restored. Guastalla was founded by the See also:Lombards in the 7th century; in the See also:church of the Pieve See also:Pope See also:Paschal II. held a See also:council in IIo6. In 1307 it was seized by Giberto da See also:Correggio of Parma. In 1403 it passed to Guido Torello, See also:cousin of Filippo Maria See also:Visconti of See also:Milan. In 1539 it was sold by the last See also:female descendant of the Torelli to Ferrante See also:Gonzaga. In 1621 it was made the seat of a duchy, but in 1748 it was added to those of Parma and See also:Piacenza, whose See also:history it subsequently followed.
