After studying See also:law at the university of See also:Halle, he obtained a legal See also:appointment in the See also:state service at See also:Berlin, but in 18o6 resigned this See also:office in See also:order to devote himself exclusively to letters. In 1810 he was appointed See also:professor extraordinarius of German literature in the university of Berlin; in the following See also:year he was transferred in a similar capacity to See also:Breslau, and in 1821 returned to Berlin as professor ordinaries. He died at Berlin on the 11th of See also:June 1856. Although von der Hagen's See also:critical See also:work is now entirely out of date, the See also:chief merit of awakening an See also:interest in old German See also:poetry belongs to him. His See also:principal publications are the See also:Nibelungenlied, of which he issued four See also:editions, the first in 1810 and the last in 1842; the Minnesinger (See also:Leipzig, 1838–1856, 4 vols. in 5 parts) ; Lieder der altern See also:Edda (Berlin, 1812) ; Gottfried von See also:Strassburg (Berlin, 1823) ; a collection of Old German tales under the See also:title Gesamtabenteuer (See also:Stuttgart, 1850, 3 vols.) and Das See also:Heldenbuch (Leipzig, 1855). He also published fiber See also:die altesten Darstellungen der Faustsage (Berlin, 1844); and from 1835 he edited Das neue Jahrbuch der Berlinischen Gesellschaft See also:fur deutsche Sprache and Altertumskunde.
