HOMEL , or GomEL, a See also:

town of See also:Russia, in the See also:government of See also:Mogilev, and 132 M. by See also:rail S.S.E. of the town of Mogilev, on the Sozh, a tributary of the See also:Dnieper. Pop. (1900) 45,081, nearly See also:half of whom are See also:Jews. It is an important junction of the See also:railways from See also:Vilna to See also:Odessa and from See also:Orel to See also:Poland, and is in steamer communication with See also:Kiev and Mogilev. In front of See also:Prince See also:Paskevich's See also:castle stands an equestrian statue of the See also:Polish See also:general See also:Joseph See also:Poniatowski, and in the See also:cathedral is the See also:tomb of the See also:chancellor Nikolai Petrovich Rumantsev, by See also:Canova. The town carries on a brisk See also:trade in hops, See also:corn and See also:timber; there are also See also:paper-pulp See also:mills and oil factories. Homel was founded in the 12th See also:century, and after changing hands several times between Poles and Russians was annexed to Russia in 1772. In 1648 it suffered at the hands of the Cossack chieftain Bogdan See also:Chmielnicki.
