HUNINGEN , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in See also:Alsace-See also:Lorraine, situated on the See also:left See also:bank of the See also:Rhine, on a See also:branch of the Rhine-See also:Rhone See also:canal, and 3 M. N. of See also:Basel by See also:rail. Pop. (19o5) 3304• The Rhine is here crossed by an See also:iron railway See also:bridge. The town boasts a handsome See also:Roman See also:Catholic See also:church, and has manufactures of See also:silk, watches, chemicals and cigars. Huningen is an See also:ancient See also:place and See also:grew up See also:round a stronghold placed to guard the passage of the Rhine. It was wrested from the Imperialists by the See also:duke of See also:Lauenburg in 1634, and subsequently passed by See also:purchase to See also:Louis XIV. of See also:France. It was fortified by See also:Vauban (1679–1681) and a bridge was built across the Rhine. The fortress capitulated to the Austrians on the 26th of See also:August 1815 and the See also:works were shortly afterwards dismantled. In 1871, the town passed, with Alsace-Lorraine, to the See also:German See also:empire.
