IAZYGES , a tribe of Sarmatians first heard of on the Maeotis, where they were among the See also:allies of 1blithradates the See also:Great. Moving westward across See also:Scythia, and hence called Metanastae, they were on the See also:lower See also:Danube by the See also:time of See also:Ovid, and about A.D. 5o occupied the plains See also:east of the See also:Theiss. Here, under the See also:general name of See also:Sarmatae, they were a perpetual trouble to the See also:Roman See also:province of See also:Dacia. They were divided into freemen and See also:serfs (Sarmatae Limigantes), the latter of whom had a , different manner of See also:life and were probably an older settled See also:population enslaved by See also:nomad masters. They See also:rose against them in A.D. 334, but were repressed by See also:foreign aid. Nothing is heard of Iazyges or Sarmatae after the Hunnish invasions. See also:Graves at Keszthely and elsewhere in the Theiss valley, shown by their contents to belong to nomads of the first centuries A.D., are referred to the Iazyges. (E. H.
