INNOCENT IX . (Giovanni See also:Antonio Fachinetti) was See also:born in 1519. He filled the offices of apostolic See also:vicar of See also:Avignon, See also:legate at the See also:council of See also:Trent, See also:nuncio to See also:Venice, and See also:president of the See also:Inquisition. He became See also:cardinal in 1583; and under the invalid See also:Gregory XIV. assumed almost the entire conduct of affairs. His See also:election to the papacy, on the 29th of See also:October 1J91, was brought about by See also:Philip II., who profited little by it, however, inasmuch as Innocent soon succumbed to See also:age and feebleness, dying on the 3oth of See also:December 1591.
