KALACH , also known as DONSKAYA, a See also:village of S.E. See also:Russia, in the territory of the See also:Don See also:Cossacks, and a See also:river See also:port onthe Don, 31 M. N.E. of Nizhne-Chirskaya, in 430 30' E. and 48° 43' N. Its permanent See also:population, only about 1200, increases greatly in summer. It is the See also:terminus of the railway (45 m.; which connects the Don with See also:Tsaritsyn on the See also:Volga, and all the goods (especially See also:fish, See also:petroleum, cereals and See also:timber) brought from the See also:Caspian See also:Sea up the Volga and destined for See also:middle Russia, or for export through the Sea of See also:Azov, are unloaded at Tsaritsyn and sent over to Kalach on the Don.
