TSARITSYN , a See also:town of See also:Russia, in the See also:government of See also:Saratov, situated on the right See also:bank of the See also:Volga, where it suddenly turns towards the See also:south-See also:east, 40 M. distant from the See also:Don. Pop. (Igloo), 67,65o. Tsaritsyn is the See also:terminus of a railway which begins at See also:Riga and, See also:running south-eastwards, intersects all the See also:main lines which radiate from See also:Moscow to the south. It is also connected by See also:rail with See also:Kalach on the Don, where merchandise from the See also:Sea of See also:Azov is disembarked. See also:Corn from See also:middle Russia for See also:Astrakhan is transferred from the rail-way to boats at Tsaritsyn; See also:timber and wooden wares from the upper Volga are unloaded here and sent by rail to Kalach; and See also:fish, See also:salt and fruits sent from Astrakhan by See also:boat up the Volga are here unloaded and despatched by rail to the interior of Russia. The town has grown rapidly since the completion of the railway See also:system, and has a large See also:trade in See also:petroleum from See also:Baku. Tsaritsyn is also the centre of the trade in the See also:mustard of Sarepta, Dubovka and the neighbourhood. The See also:fisheries are important. The buildings of the town includea public library, and the See also: A fort was erected here in the 16th century to prevent the incursions of the See also:free See also:Cossacks and runaway See also:serfs who gathered on the See also:lower Volga, as also the raids of the Kalmucks and Circassians. In 16o6 Tsaritsyn took See also:part in the rising in favour of the false See also:Demetrius, and Stenka See also:Razin took the town in r67o. The Kalmucks and Circassians of the See also:Kuban attacked it repeatedly in the 17th century, so that it had to be fortified by a strong earthen and palisaded See also:wall, traces of which are still visible.
