AZOV , or Asov (in See also:

Turkish, Asak), a See also:town of See also:Russia, in the See also:government of the See also:Don See also:Cossacks, on the See also:left See also:bank of the See also:southern See also:arm of the Don, about 20 M. from its mouth. The See also:ancient Tanais See also:lay some lo m. to the See also:north. In the 13th See also:century the Genoese had a factory here which they called See also:Tana. Azov was See also:long a See also:place of See also:great military and commercial importance. See also:Peter the Great obtained See also:possession of it after a protracted See also:siege in 1696, but in 1711 restored it to the See also:Turks; in 1739 it was finally See also:united to the See also:Russian See also:empire. Since then it has greatly declined, owing to the silting up of its See also:harbour and the competition of See also:Taganrog. Its See also:population, principally engaged in the See also:fisheries, numbered 25,124 in 1900.
