TANA , a See also:

river of See also:British See also:East See also:Africa, which gives its name to the Tanaland See also:province of that See also:protectorate. It has a course, following the See also:main windings only, of over 5oo m. Its See also:sources are along the See also:watershed See also:close to the eastern See also:wall of the eastern rift-valley, and it enters the See also:Indian Ocean in 2° 40' S., about 1 ro m. N. by E. of See also:Mombasa. One See also:series of its numerous headstreams traverses the Kikuyu See also:plateau See also:north of the Athi, while others flow down the See also:southern and eastern slopes of See also:Kenya. The main stream, from about 37° E. 1° S., where it runs close to the upper See also:waters of tht Athi, flows in a wide See also:curve N.E., nearly reaching the See also:equator. About 390 E. it turns S., and from this point is not known to receive any tributary of importance. Its course is very tortuous, the current rapid, and the channel much obstructed by snags. Its width varies, as a See also:general See also:rule, between roo and 200 yds. The See also:banks are usually See also:low, in See also:part forested and inundated at high See also:water, but away from the river the See also:country appears to consist of dry plains covered with See also:mimosa scrub. Adjoining the See also:lower Tana are many backwaters, which seem to show that the course has been subject to See also:great changes.

In 2 ° 20' S. the river again turns east, but during the last ro m. it flows See also:

south-See also:west, parallel to the See also:coast, entering the See also:sea across a dangerous See also:bar. The Tana has been navigated in a See also:steam-See also:launch for some 300 M. from the mouth. North of the Tana is the Ozi, a small river connected with the Tana by the Belazoni See also:canal.
