The fort stands on an isolated See also:rock, the termination of the See also:Vindhya range, at an See also:elevation of 1203 ft., overlooking the plains of See also:Bundelkhand. Kalinjar is the most characteristic specimen of the hill-fortresses, originally hill-shrines, of central India. Its antiquity is proved by its mention in the Mahabharata. It was besieged by Mahmud of See also:Ghazni in 1023, and here the Afghan See also:emperor Sher Shah met his See also:death in 1545, and Kalinjar played a prominent See also:part in See also:history down to the See also:- TIME (0. Eng. Lima, cf. Icel. timi, Swed. timme, hour, Dan. time; from the root also seen in " tide," properly the time of between the flow and ebb of the sea, cf. O.
