KERASUND (anc. Choerades, Pharnacia, Cerasus) , a See also:town on the N. See also:coast of See also:Asia See also:Minor, in the See also:Trebizond vilayet, and the See also:port—an exposed roadstead—of Kara-See also:Hissar Sharki, with which it is connected by a See also:carriage road. Pop. just under 1o,oco, Moslems being in a slight minority. The town is situated on a rocky promontory, crowned by a See also:Byzantine fortress, and has a growing See also:trade. It exports filberts (for which product it is the centre), walnuts, hides and See also:timber. Cerasus was the See also:place from which the See also:wild See also:cherry was introduced into See also:Italy by See also:Lucullus and so to See also:Europe (hence Fr. cerise, " cherry ").
