KIELCE , a See also:

town of See also:Russian See also:Poland, See also:capital of the above See also:government, 152 M. by See also:rail S. of See also:Warsaw, situated in a picturesque hilly See also:country. Pop. (1890),12,775; (1897), 23,189. It has a See also:castle, built in 1638 and for some See also:time inhabited by See also:Charles XII.; it was renowned for its portrait See also:gallery and the library of Zaluski, which was taken to St See also:Petersburg. The squares and boulevards are lined with handsome See also:modern buildings. The See also:principal factories are See also:hemp-See also:spinning, See also:cotton-See also:printing and See also:cement See also:works. The town was founded in 1173 by a See also:bishop of See also:Cracow. In the 16th See also:century it was famous for its See also:copper mines, but they are no longer worked.
