KONIGSSEE , or See also:

Lake of St See also:Bartholomew, a lake of See also:Germany, in the See also:kingdom of See also:Bavaria, See also:province of Upper Bavaria, about 22 m. S. from See also:Berchtesgaden, 185o ft. above See also:sea-level. It has a length of 5 m., and a breadth varying from 500 yards to a little over a mile, and attains a maximum See also:depth of 600 ft. The Konigssee is the most beautiful of all the lakes in the See also:German See also:Alps, pent in by See also:limestone mountains rising to an See also:altitude of 65oo ft., the flanks of which descend precipitously to the See also:green See also:waters below. The lake abounds in See also:trout, and the surrounding See also:country is See also:rich in See also:game. On a promontory by the See also:side of the lake is a See also:chapel to which pilgrimages are made on St Bartholomew's See also:Day. Separated by a narrow See also:strip of See also:land from the Konigssee is the Obersee, a smaller lake.
