LIPPSTADT , a See also:town in the Prussian See also:province of See also:Westphalia, on the See also:river See also:Lippe, 20 M. by See also:rail W. by S. of See also:Paderborn, on the See also:main See also:line to See also:Dusseldorf. Pop. (1905) 15,436. The Marien Kirche is a large edifice in the Transitional See also:style, dating from the 13th See also:century. It has several See also:schools, among them being one which was originally founded as a nunnery in 1185. The manufactures include See also:cigar-making, distilling, See also:carriage-See also:building and See also:metal-working. Lippstadt was founded in 1168 by the lords of Lippe, the rights over one See also:half of the town passing subsequently by See also:purchase to the See also:counts of the See also:Mark, which in 1614 was incorporated with See also:Brandenburg. In 1850 the See also:prince of Lippe-Detmold sold his See also:share to See also:Prussia when this See also:joint lordship ceased.
