MAIHAR , a native See also:

state of Central See also:India, in the Baghelkhand agency. See also:Area, 407 sq. m.; pop. (1901), 63,702; estimated See also:revenue, £4700. The state, which is watered by the Tons See also:river, consists mainly of alluvial See also:soil covering See also:sandstone, and is fertile except in the hilly See also:district of the See also:south. A large area is under See also:forest, the produce of which provides a small export See also:trade. The See also:chief, whose See also:title is See also:raja, claims descent from the Kachwaha See also:Rajput See also:clan. The state suffered severely from See also:famine in 1896--1897. The See also:town of Maihar (pop. 6802) is on the See also:East See also:Indian railway, 97 M. N. of See also:Jubbulpore. Extensive ruins of shrines and other buildings in its neighbourhood indicate a former much greater extent of the See also:place.
