MARIE GALANTE , an See also:island in the See also:French See also:West Indies. It lies in 15° 55' N. and 61° 17' W., 16 m. S.E. of See also:Guadeloupe, of which it is a dependency. It is nearly circular in shape and 55 sq. m. in See also:area. A rocky See also:limestone See also:plateau, rising in the See also:east to a height of 675 ft., occupies the centre of the island, and from it the See also:land descends in a See also:series of well-wooded terraces to the See also:sea. The shores are rocky, there are no harbours, and the roadstead off See also:Grand Bourg is difficult of See also:access, owing to the surrounding reefs. The See also:climate is healthy and the See also:soil See also:rich; See also:sugar, See also:coffee and See also:cotton being the See also:chief products. The largest See also:town is Grand Bourg (pop. 6901) on the See also:south-west See also:coast. The island was discovered by See also:Columbus in 1493, and received its name from the See also:vessel on which he was sailing. The French who settled here in 1648 suffered numerous attacks both from the Dutch and the See also:British, but since 1766, except for a See also:short See also:period of British See also:rule in the See also:early See also:part of the 19th See also:century, they have held undisturbed See also:possession.
